UoB Model United Nations

From January 27th-29th, the second edition of the University of Birmingham International Model United Nations (UBIMUN) Conference took place.

Students (‘delegates’) from across the wold, from a variety of disciplines, came together to engage in political and social debates to find solutions to global issues. This year’s UBIMUN focussed on simulating the 1983 period of the Cold War. Participants took on the various roles of government ministers in their respective cabinets, giving them the unique opportunity to find innovative ways to shape both a nation and the world during this tense period in global history. This year’s cabinet consisted of the USA, USSR, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The event began and ended with opening and closing ceremonies, featuring guest speakers, with weekend-long Committee sessions (including ‘summits’ between the world leaders) in-between.

UBIMUN is a great way for students to push their creativity to the limit – the crisis simulations allow students to prioritise responsibilities and tasks in order to negotiate and strategically assess situations. Most importantly, however, delegates realise the importance and consequences of their actions and how they can make a positive impact on the world. Delegates further enhance their team-working and interpersonal skills through coming together and brokering peace/economic deals. UBIMUN was a great way to prepare participants for the professional work environment, regardless of their career ambitions.

UNIMUN is a fantastic personal development opportunity. Delegates network with high-calibre individuals and create friendships than span the globe. Through promoting diversity and enhancing cultural awareness, delegates leave the conference as more well-rounded individuals.
